Welcome to 7th Grade Physical Education at Petaluma Junior High School. This letter is to help students and parents better understand the expectations and guidelines for my class and our schools Physical Education program. Hopefully you have some idea of our program after reading the purple Physical Education Department Page that was sent home in the summer packet.  After reviewing this letter as well as our summer page, please fill out, sign, and have your child return the detached portion to Mrs. McGaughey by Tuesday August 24th. (the first page is for your student to keep in his/her binder for personal reference). If you should have any questions the best way to reach me is to call the girls locker room at 778-4724 ext. 1202 . I am only teaching on “A” days, so expect a delay if your message is left on an “B” day. You may also email me anytime (mailto: mcgaughey@pjhspe.com)

CLASS OVERVIEW

The emphasis for 7th Grade Physical Education is “Meeting Challenges and Making Decisions”. Classes will include health & fitness, personal & team challenges, nutrition, drug & alcohol prevention, individual & cooperative games, skill development and State Physical Fitness Testing. All activities will tie into the State and National Standards.

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

-          Bring a good attitude, a willingness to learn, and your best effort each day

-          Help contribute to a positive, productive, and safe class environment

-          RESPECT all people and property (including equipment and facilities)

-          Take RESPONSIBILITY for yourself and your actions

-          Be SAFE at all times

CLASS NOTEBOOK/MATERIALS

Each student will need a separate 1” binder for his/her PE class that will primarily stay in their PE locker.  The notebook needs to have:

·         Lined Paper (Not a spiral notebook)

·         Name, period labeled clearly on the outside

·         Pens and pencils attached to notebook (plastic pouch, string, etc.)

·         Notebook Due Thursday August 26th

DRESSING POLICY

-          The PE uniform is designed to enhance safety, performance, hygiene, and comfort

-          All students are required to dress everyday in their own clothing labeled with last name and first initial.

-          A NON-DRESS (ND) is defined as not wearing your own PE shirt (tucked in), purple shorts, athletic shoes (tied tightly), and/or the proper sweats. Sweats are to be worn over your PE uniform.

-          NON-DRESS consequences are as follows:

-1st ND = “F” for the day and a warning

-2nd ND (and each additional ND) = “F” for the day, a referral, and may include ISS for the period.

ABSENCES

-          Since PE is a participatory class, it is important that students attend class regularly

-          PE hours are state mandated and students must accumulate regular PE hours – therefore missed classes must be made up in order to receive PE credit.

-          Absences will affect a student’s grade if they are not made up

-          Generally, two make-ups are required for an absence, but it is the responsibility of the student to check with Mrs. McGaughey after returning from any absence to see exactly what work he/she missed.

MAKE-UPS

-          Make-ups will begin the week of September 7th. Students must be on the blacktop dressed in their PE clothes by the time make-ups begin.

Students will not be admitted to make-ups if they are tardy. Make-up days and times will be announced.

-          All make-ups must be completed by the end of each grading period for credit. If you are absent the last week of the grading period then

you have one additional week to do make-ups.

-          Students must bring with them to make-ups a PE MAKE UP FORM. These forms must be filled out before you come to make ups.

You can get make-up forms form Mrs. McGaughey or the class webpage.

            -     All tests/quizzes must be made up within a week of returning to class.

MEDICAL EXCUSES

ALL medical notes should specify a student’s restrictions or limitations

      Parent Note:

-   Student still dresses for PE

-   Student is given a modified activity or alternate assignment but still participates as best they can.

-   Parent note is good for only 2 classes; after that a doctor note is required

                  Doctor Note:

                  -   May excuse the student from dressing and/or limit their activity.

                  -   Student participates in class activities with modifications or is given an alternate assignment.

GRADING POLICY

Throughout the school year each student will be evaluated in the following categories:

·         Participation and Effort

Giving your best effort daily and demonstrating a willingness to try new things.

·         Social Skills

Demonstrating important life-skills such as cooperation, respect, responsibility, and teamwork.

·         Performance

Demonstration of physical skills, the understanding of the skills, rules, strategies, concepts, and the completion of assigned tasks and activities.

·         Written Work

The completion of all written classroom assignments as they are given which are to be kept in their binder.

LATE WORK – accepted as follows

Next day = 75%                                  Next class =  50 %                            After that = 25% (till end of grading period)

SURVIVAL TIPS

Within our entire department we believe in personal success. Students will be compared to themselves and not to other students. As long as the student comes prepared to class, with a good attitude, and consistently gives his/her best effort, he/she will have an excellent chance of doing well in this class.

                                                          Thank you,

                                                                 Mrs McGaughey
